In the wake of Senator Steve Daines’ (R-MT) publicly stated intent to derail the nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM) for Secretary of the Interior, the Global Indigenous Council, the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association, and Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council have issued joint letters urging members of the US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to support Rep. Haaland. A 35th generation New Mexican from the Pueblo of Laguna, if confirmed, Rep. Haaland would be the first Indigenous person to head Interior, the federal agency that directly oversees Indian Country.
As stated in the letters to Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Daines, the allied Indigenous organizations represent tribes from a huge stretch of territory in the Western US. “Together, the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council, the Global Indigenous Council, and the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association represents every tribe in Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, and tribal nations in states as geographically disparate as Louisiana, Arizona, and Alaska. In short, a large swath of Indian Country and the citizenry arguably most invested in and impacted by the policies adopted by the Department of Interior.”

Tell him you support the first Indigenous woman to be nominated for Secretary of Interior.

“After Zinke and Bernhardt, it probably is a ‘radical’ idea to have a Secretary of Interior who will protect public lands and not plunder them. Preserve endangered species and not blow them away to hang as trophies on a wall. Who will uphold the federal-Indian trust responsibility and address the crippling disparities in federal services to Indian Country. The only endangered species threatened by Secretary of Interior Haaland might be the likes of Senator Daines’ and Senator Barrasso’s extractive industry cronies.”
